After working with teen girls for more than ten years I have seen firsthand how teenage girls are struggling mentally and emotionally more than ever. Nearly 60 percent of teen girls in the U.S. reported feeling persistently sad and hopeless in 2021, almost double the numbers reported by teen boys and the highest levels of distress reported since 2011. This report from the CDC also found that:

Counseling for Teen Girls

1 in 3 teen girls had seriously considered suicide.

1 in 5 experienced sexual violence in the previous year.

14 percent reported being forced to have sex.

22 percent of LGBTQ+ youth had attempted suicide in the previous year.

Just 22 percent of teens reported being close to their family.

The teenage years can be tough: for them and for you.

did you know?

When your teen comes to me they will enter a space where they can be heard without judgement. I will spend time getting to know your teen, not just about the things they are struggling with, but also about the things that are going well in their lives. I want your daughter to feel as if she has a place she can come to share life’s victories and hardships. Therapy won’t be something she dreads doing but will ultimately be a time in her week she looks forward to! I’ve gotten the wonderful privilege of counseling teen girls on and off throughout middle school, into high school, all the way to their graduation date. First and foremost, we form a relationship while also working on therapy goals. I also incorporate:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

Mindfulness

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills

Build her self-confidence.

Identify and implement wellness goals to decrease depressive symptoms. (We will work on improving physical, emotional, and mental wellness to holistically treat depressive symptoms).

Decrease anxiety and build resilience to overcome anxiety triggers.

Increase social relationships and social skills (as we work on social anxiety to build confidence in social situations).

Work on building emotional regulation skills to replace self-injurious behaviors or other unhelpful coping mechanisms.

Improve relationships with family members and peers as she learns and practices communication skills in sessions.

Improve her self-worth as she learns what healthy dating relationships and friendships look like.
