I want to speak directly to you. Yes, you- juggling work, family, friendships, maybe ministry, and trying to keep it all together. Maybe you’re feeling stretched, tired, a bit hollow, or longing for something more than just surviving. I see you. I understand. As a Christian counselor, a working mom, and someone who has walked through pain, grief and loss, infertility, and health conditions…I believe soul‑care is not optional. It’s essential. Let me tell you why, and then share some practical ways and rhythms to help you take care of your soul well.
Self-Care focuses on things that you can do to take care of your physical body, your mind, and emotional well being. There’s an emphasis on taking action and doing something obtainable that promises an observable outcome or result. Soul-Care focuses less on “doing” and more on noticing and then caring for your inner life: your heart and soul. Everyone has an inner life, and that inner life I believe is always trying to get our attention. In fact, it demands your attention because I believe God is deeply committed to your wholeness and your holiness.
More women today are putting first things first when it comes to physical health and caring for their bodies. Things that used to feel like “extras” have become non‐negotiables. Everywhere you look there’s talk about skincare routines, beauty tools, health trends like dry brushing, saunas, microneedling, massage, strength training.
Hear me out: self‑care matters. It is a crucial part of mental health and wellness. Sometimes that face mask or workout at the gym is exactly the thing you need to unwind, shake off stress, or feel a little more confident. And it does more than make you feel good in the moment. It transforms your physical health, refreshes your body, improves your relationships. Yes, it is that important.
If you’re a mom you know what I’m talking about- that tiny window of “me time.” Maybe you feel drained, worn out, emotionally stretched, spiritually thirsty because motherhood, marriage, and living in a broken world are bound to leave their imprints on your soul.
You carve out a moment for yourself, you get your nails done, and you squeeze in a workout or follow a skincare routine. Somewhere you’ve heard that self‑care is your lifeline. But sometimes after all that, you still feel empty. The places in your heart and soul no one else sees? They’re still raw. Still waiting to be tended to.
Here’s what I believe: self‑care matters. It absolutely does. It helps you breathe again and it brings temporary relief. But self‑care alone cannot reach the places in your soul that need deep healing. There’s something more essential, something stronger.
That thing is soul‑care.
Soul‑care is about tending to your inner life: your identity, your relationship with God, your longings, wounds, and hopes. It’s more than emotions or mental health alone; it includes the spiritual, the relational, and the deeper parts of you. It’s rooted in Scripture, in the invitation of Jesus: “Come to me, all who are weary and burdened… you will find rest for your souls.” (Matthew 11:28‑29)
If you are living on this earth, you are not immune to suffering, disappointment, heartache, or loss. Living in this broken world will have its toll on your soul. I fully believe we were never meant to carry the weight of knowledge that we have with 24/7 access to social media and world news. Every day brings a new tragedy in the news. Join this with your heart’s own traumas, losses, or sorrow- and your soul is bound to feel the effects.
Soul-care invites God into the weary, discouraged, empty places of your heart.
If your soul’s feeling tired, dry, or just buried under all the noise and responsibility, you’re not alone. But here’s the good news: you don’t have to overhaul your life to begin caring for your soul. You can start small. You can start now. Here are some ways to gently begin tending to what’s going on underneath the surface.
Time with God (Prayer & Scripture)
Even five quiet minutes matter. Open your Bible, read a psalm or a short passage from the Gospels, and ask God what He wants you to hear today. No pressure. Just presence.
Journaling & Reflection
Write down what’s weighing on your heart. What are you carrying today? Where do you feel stuck? What do you believe about God in this moment? It’s not about perfect words. It’s about honesty.
Silence & Stillness
Turn off the noise. No phone, no music, no task list. Just a few minutes to breathe, to be, and to listen.
Safe Friendship & Spiritual Community
Find someone you can be real with. Someone who will pray with you, not just give advice. We aren’t meant to carry everything alone.
Sabbath & Rest Rhythms
Say no to what drains you. Make room to slow down. Not everything needs your immediate response. Rest is not lazy—it’s obedience. It’s trusting that God holds it all, even when you step back.
There’s no perfect formula. But consistency makes all the difference. Here’s a rhythm you can grow into:
Daily
Even just a few minutes of prayer, Scripture, silence, or gratitude. These little moments anchor your heart.
Weekly
Set aside a longer pause—maybe a morning, an afternoon, or even just a couple of hours to rest, reset, and reflect. My absolutely FAVORITE tool to help me pause is the Pause App. It’s literally my lifeline and has helped me return to Christ when my soul feels weighed down. If you do one thing today, download this app for free.
Monthly or Seasonally
Make space to step back and ask yourself: What’s working? What’s draining me? Where do I need more margin, more grace, more of God?
Soul care doesn’t have to be big or dramatic. It just has to happen. And when you make space for it, even in the middle of chaos- you will begin to notice God meeting you right there.
