If you’re reading this in the middle of another two-week wait, another negative test, or another appointment that didn’t go the way you hoped…I want you to know something before anything else: I see you, and this pain is real. Infertility is one of the quietest kinds of grief, because so much of it happens in waiting rooms, bathroom stalls, and the privacy of your own heart. In times like these, some couples consider counseling for infertility to find guidance and support. And so often, right alongside the physical and emotional weight of it, comes a harder question: Does God still have a plan for me, even now?

I hear this question often in my work with women and couples walking through infertility, and I don’t think it’s a sign of weak faith to ask it. I think it’s one of the most honest questions a person can bring to God. This is exactly the kind of season where Christian counseling for infertility can offer real support- not just clinically, but spiritually as well.

You’re Allowed to Grieve This

Before we talk about faith, I want to say plainly: you’re allowed to be sad. You’re allowed to be angry. You’re allowed to grieve a due date that never came, a pregnancy test you were sure would be different, or the version of parenthood you imagined that hasn’t unfolded the way you pictured. Infertility is a loss, sometimes a repeated one, and it deserves to be grieved, not just managed.

In our culture, and sometimes even in our churches, there can be pressure to rush past the pain toward a hopeful, faith-filled conclusion. But Scripture doesn’t ask us to do that. The Psalms are full of raw, honest lament. You’ll read of real anger and real sorrow, brought straight to God without a tidy bow on top. Hannah, in 1 Samuel, wept bitterly and prayed with such intensity that the priest thought she was drunk. Her grief over infertility wasn’t something she hid from God- it was something she brought to Him.

Where I see God in This Season of Infertility

I don’t believe God causes infertility as some kind of test or punishment. What I do believe is that He is present in the middle of it He’s not distant, not indifferent, and not finished writing your story yet.

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Not far off, waiting for you to feel better first. Close, right now, in the middle of the waiting and the grief. That’s not a promise about how your story ends. It’s a promise about who is with you while your story is still being written.

What Counseling Can Offer Alongside Your Faith

This is exactly the kind of season where I believe Christian counseling for infertility and faith aren’t separate paths. In our sessions, this might look like:

– Having a space to grieve honestly, without needing to perform hope you don’t feel yet

– Processing the strain infertility can put on your marriage, and finding ways back to connection

– Bringing Scripture and prayer into session, if and when that feels right to you

– Working through the specific anxieties of IVF, treatment cycles, or the decision to pursue adoption or other ways to grow your family

– Simply being known and supported by someone who isn’t asking you to explain or justify your pain
